Pod studios

Coming from the music industry, I was always trying to figure out ways to create a better local community and create work that could help me gain back time so I could focus on what I loved - making music.

While collaborating at a friends studio, he told me he was paying $750 a week for a small 5mx5m space in Surry Hills. Shocking! It's hard enough making money to live but also paying extra rent isn't easy. The studio was nice. The space didn't have the greatest community or vibe.

MOVEABLE
This got me thinking. I did some research. I called a couple of commercial realestate agents in the area. I realised I could get far more space for a third of the price of this studio - I'd have to fit out the studio part of it.At the same time I'd seen these old demountable studios for sale. Second hand they were roughly selling for $5000-$7000.

THE MODEL

I managed to find an old art studio in Redfern that had floor space for me to set up and allow people to hire.

The model:
1. I find cheap central to the CBD realestate ✅
2. Install recording studios ✅
3. Then rent them out to sound designers, podcasters, music producers, voice overs etc to make a profit.I bought the demountable studio box for $5000 2mx2m (it was small!)My space was $150/weekIf I wanted to make decent returns like my friends studio, I'd need to charge roughly $70/day.

I ran it for 7 months, and while the idea worked, finding the right location for the right price was the biggest variable. I ended up selling the business for a small profit.
